There are numerous criticisms of the new UK visa points based system. If low skilled workers are not allowed into the Country this is likely to mean serious skills shortages.
The current expensive and bureaucratic Tier 2 Sponsor Licence system it seems will continue, and actually more people will come under it.
Home Secretary, Priti Patel, unveiled the UK’s new points-based visa and immigration system on 19 February, 2020.
New points-based system
Under the new system, points will be awarded based on meeting certain criteria, some of which are mandatory:
- 10 points English (mandatory)
- 20 points for a sponsor (mandatory)*
- 20 points for right skill level (mandatory)
- 0 points to 20 points will be awarded for a job’s salary ranges from £20,480 to over £25,600
- 20 points for a shortage occupation list job
- 10 points for a PhD degree
- 20 points will be awarded if an individual’s PhD degree is in science, technology, maths or engineering
No temporary or general work visa for low-skilled migrants
The new UK visa and immigration system will not include a temporary or general work visa option for low-skilled migrants. Likely to mean serious skills shortages.
Most EU workers after Brexit transition would not meet requirements
According to estimates, approximately 70% of the current EU workforce in the UK if arriving after the Brexit transitional period would be unable to satisfy the criteria of the new UK skilled worker visa system.
