Firstly, UK Immigration has announced that the government will be reforming all routes of entry to the UK in an attempt to further reduce immigration levels. Under the proposed changes, many skilled migrant workers coming under Tier 2 of the points-based system will no longer be able to settle in the UK simply based on the amount of time they have spent in the UK. The UK government will continue to provide a direct route to settlement for investors, entrepreneurs and exceptionally talented migrants under Tier 1. There will continue to be a route to settlement for some Tier 2 migrants, if you meet a minimum salary threshold of £35,000. Changes to the immigration rules will be laid before parliament on 15 March and, most likely, come into force on 6 April 2012.

Immigration Minister Damien Green said the new fees will come into effect from 6 April 2012. In most cases fees will increase by only 2 percent, but there will be larger increases on visa fees for certain immigration routes. Including an increase in Tier 2 visas from £400 to £480 and Tier 4 visas will increase from £255 to £289 for students and their dependents.
