Passport requirements are slowly changing across the globe. The United States has already started to demand that people will be able to present machine readable passports and within 36 months the European Union citizens' passports will have the holders' fingerprints in them.

Canada has set its limit for immigrants for next year while Germany has detected a shortage in workers in lower skilled category jobs and there is a brewing clash between the United States and the European Union regarding visa free travels.

As world economy is on the rise, so is the demand for skilled professionals from abroad. Scotland is seeking to boost its work force by attracting 8,000 migrant workers per year till 2009. In a speech recently, UK Home Secretary David Blunkett said there are 600,000 vacancies in the UK economy and that there is a lot to learn from the Scottish example.

Also Australia has recognized a shortage of professionals in almost every one of its states. Demand is so high that criteria for applying for a visa and work permit there have been lowered.

In Canada it has been decided that immigrants to Saskatchewan will receive English language training as the authorities there have recognized the necessity for foreign professionals to be able to communicate.

On a more technical note, the UK is set to introduce a computer system with the ability to identify immigrants...

The year is soon coming to an end and so will the US Green Card lottery. Those who still consider applying should hurry up and do so before time is up. Also noteworthy are upcoming changes to immigration policies in the US. Visa application requirements are expected to tighten.

Meanwhile, New Zealand is recognizing the importance of having skilled professionals. The country's Ethnic Affairs Minister Chris Carter said the country is willing to spend more and more money on improving conditions for the increased number of immigrants landing on its shores.

Finally, the American Interpol head is not pleased with the lack of security on the UK borders. He pointed out that he didn't have to give his passport number at the border when he arrived in the country.
