Caitlyn Jenner outlines US immigration plans in governor bid

Former Olympian and Kardashian family reality TV star, Caitlyn Jenner, who is running to replace Gavin Newsom in the recall election for California governor, has outlined her US immigration plans and stated that she is ‘all for Trump’s wall’. The transgender icon wants to continue Trump’s legacy of building the wall along the US-Mexico border.

In an interview with Fox News, Jenner said: “I am all for the wall. We can’t have a state, we can’t have a country, without a secure wall.”

Meanwhile, Jenner said that she would do her ‘absolute best’ to end California’s status as a sanctuary state that avoids working with federal immigration agents, though Jenner did say that the US immigration system needs to ‘modernise’ and allow more people to come to California.

First interview

Jenner’s interview with Fox News was the first since launching her bid to defeat current California governor, Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, in a likely upcoming recall election, according to a report published by The Independent.

The reality TV star said that she was an ‘outsider’ in the governor race, but said she is ‘in a race for solutions’. 

Jenner said: “I need to find solutions to be able to turn this state around. I absolutely love this state. I'm a fighter. Always have been.”

The former Olympian, who is transgender, spoke of her desire to stand as a role model for the trans community, saying: “For me as a trans woman, I think role models are extremely important for young people.”

“For me to be a role model, for them, to be out there, I am running for governor of the state of California, who would ever thunk that? We’ve never even had a woman governor,” she added.

Jenner criticized by LGBT+ groups

Despite commenting on wanting to stand for the trans gender community, Jenner’s governor bid has been heavily criticized by LGBTQ+ rights groups and prominent activists because of her previous support for Donald Trump and other GOP lawmakers who have advocated for anti-trans legislation.

Equality California, one of the state’s largest LGBTQ+ rights groups, blasted Jenner’s governor bid saying: “Make no mistake: we can’t wait to elect a (hash)trans governor of California. But Caitlyn Jenner spent years telling the LGBTQ+ community to trust Donald Trump. We saw how that turned out. Now she wants us to trust her? Hard pass.”

Jenner also drew further criticism recently, when she said that she opposes ‘biological boys who are trans competing in girls’ sports in school’. Jenner said: “It just isn’t fair.”

When asked by Fox News during her interview over how she felt about people being ‘mad’ at her, Jenner said: “That’s that, I don’t care. I move on.”

Support for the Republican party

Jenner has long been vocal in her support of the Republican party and backed Trump’s 2016 presidential election campaign. However, in 2018, Jenner did a U-turn on her support for Trump, saying: “The reality is that the trans community is being relentlessly attacked by this President.”

Fox News claims that Jenner is working with two former Trump aides, Tony Fabrizio and Steven Cheung, as she bids to become California governor.

Campaign pledges stated on Jenner’s website include ‘cutting state regulations’, ‘addressing affordable housing and homelessness’, and ‘putting a stop to new and higher taxes’.
