UK Visas and Immigration GDPR data exemptions slammed by MPs
As reported by Workpermit.com in February, UK Visas and Immigration will be exempt from new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) to be introduced by the EU on 25 May, 2018. The UK government plans to bypass regulations that would require them to disclose the data they hold on immigrants, in a move that has been blasted by MPs.
There is a secretive and at times anti migrant atmosphere at the Home Office. Even more secrecy will mean less scrutiny and even more injustice in the system. There will be more cover ups and more innocent people will suffer. Situations similar to the Windrush scandal continue to occur and with less public scrutiny are more likely to occur in future. This is likely to also make it more difficult for tier 2 visa sponsors and tier 2 visa employees to challenge bad decisions made by UK Visa.
Independent films an E2 US visa ticket for foreign investors
Increasing investment in independent films is providing foreign investors with a ticket to an E2 treaty investor visa and access to the United States, according to a Forbes report. Purchasing a US filmmaker’s screen play could lead to a coveted E2 US visa.
I think the Forbes report may be exaggerating the benefits of investments in independent films to obtain an E2 visa. It does seem to be very expensive. There is also the risk that you could lose all your money. Prospective E2 investors may wish to consider cheaper options as well costing say tens of thousands of dollars instead of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Perhaps some of the time people selling these expensive E2 visa schemes are doing so because they can make more money out of these type of schemes compared to cheaper E2 US visa routes.
There is also the E1 Treaty Trader visa scheme which may be worth considering. This is based on substantial trade rather than substantial investment. It should be noted that the E2 visa and E1 visa schemes are only available for certain nationalities. For example, Indian and Chinese nationals cannot apply for these visas unless they are married to nationals of E2 and E1 visa countries.
US Visa DACA illegal immigrants declared ‘patriots’ by new Koch Brothers ad campaign opposing Trump
Pro-immigrant supporters and mega donor billionaires, the Koch Brothers, launched a new advert campaign recently, describing America’s illegal immigrants as ‘patriots’ of the country.
It is interesting to see that a right wing group is in effect campaigning against Trump. Trump himself benefits in his businesses from people employed no H-1B visas, H-2B visas, etc. Some right wingers take a very different view from Trump (whatever that is!) and feel that more skilled workers and other migrants are a good thing.
UK Visa Tier 2 visa costs plunge foreign academics into debt
Non-EU academics on Tier 2 visas are thousands of pounds in debt because they’re forced to pay inflated UK visa fees and permanent residency costs to continue working in UK universities. Current UK immigration law allows employees from outside the EU to apply for a temporary work visa, valid for up to five years.
UK Visa costs are quite possibly the highest in the World. To obtain visas for a whole family can costs many thousands of pounds. To obtain tier 2 visas employers need a tier 2 sponsorship licence and most of the time need to pay up to £1,000 a year for the immigration skills charge (£364 a year for smaller businesses). The immigration health surcharge is somewhat misleading. Immigrants in the UK in most cases already pay taxes. Immigrants are in effect paying for the National Health Service twice. To employ non-EU migrants employers also need to apply for a tier 2 visa sponsorship licence which can be a difficult and bureaucratic process.
