Party Policies on UK Immigration in the General Election 2015
The UK General Election is looming around the corner now, taking place on 07 May 2015. We take this opportunity to look at the manifestos for three of the parties.
The Conservatives say they aim to keep net migration down to the tens of thousands and make it more difficult for EU immigrants to claim social or housing benefits.
Labour pledge to employ 1,000 new border staff, to impose a two-year wait on EU immigrants claiming unemployment benefits and cap the number of non-EU migrant workers.
The Liberal Democrats have pledged to end indefinite detention of immigrants at detention centres, to bring back entry and exit border checks and to make new applicants with poor English attend language courses before they can claim unemployment benefits.
Whoever wins the General Election we would ask that they behave in a fair and just way when enforcing the immigration laws. We know of unacceptable behaviour at times both by the Home Office and a quasi non-Governmental organisation sponsored by the Home Office. The new Government should put a stop to this.
UK Cabinet disagree over EU search and rescue plans for immigrants
After the European summit to discuss the highly dangerous journey facing immigrant's illegally crossing the Mediterranean Sea, Cameron expressed his support for expanding search and rescue operations.
He has faced strong opposition from home secretary Theresa May and foreign secretary Philip Hammond, who are holding on to their belief that such an expansion could have the adverse effect of attracting more immigrants to undertake the perilous journey.

UK Immigration making changes to English language testing in 2015
The UK Home Office has introduced changes to its Secure English Language Testing (SELT), reducing the number of language test providers and increasing security measures. Immigrants applying for visas or visa extensions will now have to take the new SELT test as part of their application.
Immigrants applying from overseas need Biometric Residence Permits in the UK
Biometric residence permits have been a requirement for all non-EU/EEA nationals applying for UK visas from within the UK since November 2008. It is now a requirement for non-EEA nationals applying for a visa from outside the UK as well. Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) for visa applications from abroad began being issued in March 2015, starting with applications made from Pakistan. BRPs are now being issued by the UK Home Office to 'Stage 2' countries, including Bangladesh, China and Germany. BRPs are now required for visa applications for all immigrants from non-EEA nations applying to stay in the UK for longer than six months.
New US L-1B Visa Guidance may reduce visa refusal rate
Barack Obama has announced plans to make doing business in the United States as 'simple and as attractive' as possible by easing the application process for L-1B work visas. L-1B is a non-immigrant visa category which allows international companies to transfer workers with specialised knowledge into the US for up to 5 years, provided they have been employed continuously by the company outside the US for 1 year in the last 3 years. The overseas company will have to show common ownership and control with the US company. There is also the L-1A for executives and managers which has similar requirements and allows entry to the US for up to seven years.
