US Immigration Skyrockets
US immigration from Southeast Asia and the Middle East has ‘skyrocketed’ in the past few years, according to a recent report.
The number of Saudis emigrating to the US has doubled between 2010 and 2013, with almost 90,000 migrants arriving in the US during this period.
There has also been a large increase in immigration from Iraq and Pakistan.
New ‘Safe Haven’ visa announced in Australia
A new deal has been agreed in Australia between the Palmer United Party and Federal government to allow refugee families to live on mainland Australia.
A new visa has been created called the Safe Haven Enterprise Visa, which is valid for five years.
PUP Party leader Clive Palmer has described the deal as ‘a win for regional Australia’.
Currently refugees wishing to claim asylum in Australia are sent to Nauru or Manus Island, but these new changes will allow refugees to integrate into the Australian community, and contribute to the local economy.
US Vice President promises immigration reform
US Vice President Joe Biden has reassured Hispanics that they intend to introduce “an awful lot” of immigration reforms after the midterm elections in November.
President Obama announced in June that he would invoke ‘executive powers’ to push through immigration reforms, although this has yet to happen.
It is alleged the delay is ‘politically motivated’ to benefit Democratic congressmen who are up for election in the midterms. If the reforms were pushed through now, then this might impact on the chances of members of the Democratic Party being elected.

UK and France crack down on illegal immigrants
The UK and France have teamed up in a new plan to tackle the problem of illegal immigrants trying to enter the UK via Calais.
The measures were announced by Home Secretary Theresa May, as part of an overall plan to increase security at the port of Calais. They include the installation of higher fencing; additional security in the car park area of the port; and the introduction of new technology which can detect people hiding in lorries. It will cost the UK government around £12million over the next three years.
Calais is one of the main ports through which illegal immigrants cross the Channel. The Governments of the UK and France hope that these new measures will help reduce the number of illegal immigrants entering the UK.
UK immigration policy could damage economy
The head of a UK recruitment agency has accused the government of endangering the UK’s economic recovery, by refusing to allow entry of more skilled migrants from outside the EU.
At the moment government policy appears to be to reduce immigration at all costs. This is despite the fact that immigration brings economic benefits to the UK; according to Alistair Cox, chief executive of Hays recruitment.
There is currently a huge skills gap, with companies finding it increasingly difficult to find job applicants with the necessary qualifications. These positions could potentially be filled by migrant workers coming to the UK from outside the EU.
