Germany second most popular immigration destination
Germany has become the world’s second most popular immigration destination after the US, according to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, up from eighth most popular in 2009.
Most immigrants come from Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. The number of migrants rose by 38% to 400,000 in 2012 and 13% in 2013.
Germany is the largest country in the European Union and the world's third largest economy. Since 2000, it has actively encouraged immigration. Like many Western Countries Germany is having to deal with an aging population and a declining population. According to the OECD, one in three people migrating within the EU goes to Germany.
UK's first Muslim Secretary of State says immigrants must learn English
Sajid Javid, the first Muslim man in the UK cabinet, has said that immigrants to the UK should learn English and should 'respect our way of life'. Mr Javid said that he knew some people who had lived in the UK for 50 years and still could not talk English. He said that this was 'not good enough'.
Mr Javid also said that he understood why some people support the anti-immigration UK Independence Party. He said that people were right to be concerned about excessive immigration.
Migration is economically neutral says OECD report
A study by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development shows that immigration has a broadly neutral financial impact on countries with large immigrant populations.
It has studied successive waves of migration over the past 50 years in OECD countries and found that the effect has rarely exceeded 0.5% of GDP in either positive or negative terms'. 'Immigrants are thus neither a burden to the public purse nor are they a panacea for addressing fiscal challenges' the report states.
PM insists UK is' working towards' 'tens of thousands' immigration target
UK Prime Minister David Cameron says that he is 'working towards' his promise of reducing net immigration to 'tens of thousands' a year by 2015.
Mr Cameron made the promise in 2010 when annual net immigration to the UK stood at 250,000. His government has introduced numerous changes to the system since then but, four years later, the total has only fallen to 210,000. Mr Cameron said that this was because people were coming from European Union countries to work in the UK.
EU citizens are allowed to live and work in the UK. Experts predict that the figure may well rise further in the next year.
Conservative MP says UK needs immigration from EU
A Conservative MP, Robert Buckland, has said that immigration from the EU to the UK is 'essential' to the country’s future. EU citizens have the right to live and work in the UK.
The Conservative Party is often seen as being against this free movement of labour. But Mr Buckland says that the UK benefits from free movement because many UK citizens live in Europe.
He said that Britons can also study and get free healthcare in the EU. He added that, in future, the UK will see a declining population and will need European workers to deal with skills shortages.
