Canada's new Start-up Visa Program (SUVP) was launched on April 1st 2013. It allows foreign entrepreneurs to pitch a business idea to Canadian investors. If the investors make 'a significant investment', then the entrepreneur will be granted permanent resident status. 2,750 visas will be available in the first year.
The Canadian immigration minister says he hopes the visa will boost Canadian business start-ups and help Canadian high-tech industries compete with the US.

The Institute for Government, a London think tank which promotes efficiency in government, says the abolition of the UK Border Agency announced last week may not be wise. Sir Ian McGee of the Institute, said, ‘It is unclear that the organisation…will be significantly improved simply by shuffling the pieces'.
UK Home Secretary Theresa May announced the abolition on 25th March. She said the agency was ‘secretive and defensive’ and was ‘not good enough’. She said she would establish two new organisations:
- one to issue visas and passports and
- the other to locate and deport illegal immigrants.
Sir Ian said that this might make matters worse and would cost a lot of money. He said investment in better IT systems would probably improve performance more.
Rupert Murdoch, the media mogul, has criticised the Australian government for claims that there is widespread abuse of the subclass 457 temporary work visa system. Mr Murdoch said the claims were 'disgraceful and racist'. In March, Australian immigration minister Brendan O'Connor said 'Rogue employers’ were deliberately employing people from overseas without giving Australians a chance.'
Prime Minister Julia Gillard said she would introduce legislation to 'put Aussie workers first'. The leader of the Australian opposition, Tony Abbott said that Ms Gillard was 'demonising foreigners'.
A new report shows that immigration is helping boost the US housing market. The report by the Mortgage Bankers Association suggests that between 2010 and 2020 immigrants will account for 35.7% of homebuyers and 26.4% of new home rentals. The report says immigrants have been important in the housing market in ‘gateway states’ such as New York and California for many years. Between 2000 and 2010, immigrants were responsible for 82.2% of the growth in new house sales in California.
But more recently, immigrants have begun to buy more houses in other states. For example, they were responsible for 34.1% of the increase in house sales in Georgia between 2000 and 2010. The report says it expects this demand to remain significant between 2010 and 2020.
