HSMP applications under the new rules will be accepted from Tuesday, 05 December. The Immigration Law Practitioner's Association (ILPA) has written to the UK Minister of Immigration Liam Byrne, detailing the potential hardship faced by many individuals due to the changes. The Minister in his response has said that giving more notice of the changes would have resulted in a sudden rush of applications leading to "significant operational difficulties". He also did not accept that people already granted HSMP had a legitimate expectation that any extension applications would be considered under rules in place at the time that they were granted HSMP.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is updating the U.S. naturalization exam. The voluntary program will continue through 2007, and will become the basis for the new mandatory test in 2008. A substantial hike in the $400 citizenship application fees is also planned.
There has been a significant loss in value of the U.S. dollar in the past several months, with a new 5-month low against the euro this month. The dollar has lost approximately 10-12% of its value against most world currencies in the past two years, most of it this year. The trend is expected to continue.
