Democrats Introduce New Citizenship Act with Major Changes to Green Card and H-1B Visa Systems
A new citizenship act was introduced by Democrats in Congress on Wednesday, which would create a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants living in the United States. The bill would also make major changes to the green card and H-1B visa systems. In practice, it is difficult to pass immigration reform legislation.
Key Changes to Green Card System
The bill would make major changes to the green card system, by eliminating the country-quota for green card so increasing the number of green cards available each year.
Key Changes to H-1B Visa System
It will offer work authorisation for dependents of H-1B visa holders and safeguard children of H-1B holders from aging out of the system.
Opposition to the Bill
The bill is expected to face strong opposition from Republicans, who have long opposed efforts to provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. However, Democrats are hopeful that the bill can pass with the support of some moderate Republicans and independents.
Benefits of the Bill
Democrats argue that the bill would have a number of benefits, including:
- Creating a more just and fair immigration system
- Helping to grow the economy by attracting more high-skilled workers from other countries
- Reuniting families who have been separated by immigration laws
Debate Over Immigration Reform
The debate over immigration reform is likely to continue for some time. However, the introduction of the US Citizenship Act of 2023 is a sign that Democrats are trying to find a solution to this complex issue.
