As we have reported earlier (see Workpermit.com newsletter Volume 2, Number1 from November 2003), from 13 November 2003 all work permit holders andother individuals who wish to remain in the UK for more than six months mustobtain entry clearance before travelling. A grace period of two months hadbeen allowed so that employers could inform their work permit holders ofthis new regulation.
Entry clearance has also now become mandatory for nationals of the followingcountries who intend to stay in the UK for longer than six months:Australia, Canada, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore,South Africa, South Korea and the USA. The two month grace period when thoseaffected are allowed to enter without entry clearance ended on 13 January2004.
If you are not a UK national and you intend to remain in the UK for morethan six months, you must arrive at a UK port of entry with entry clearanceor you will likely be refused entry.
However, this requirement does not apply to nationals of EU accessioncountries who will be joining the EU on 1 May 2004, as follows: Cyprus,Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland,Slovenia, Slovakia
