UK immigration instigates TB screening in South Africa and Zimbabwe

We would advise you that, as of 31st December 2012, people from the following countries:

South Africa
Lesotho
Swaziland
Zimbabwe

will need to be tested for tuberculosis (TB) before they apply for a visa to visit the UK for a stay of more than six months in duration.

Test compulsory if you are staying six months

This will only apply if you intend to stay in the UK for over 6 months. Please note that, if you are applying for a two and a half year, five year or ten year visitor visa, you do not need to undergo a TB test because the maximum stay in the UK on a single visit is six months with these visas.

All children over 11 years old must be tested. If you have a child under 11, you must take him to an approved clinic where the staff will decide whether a test is necessary. If they decide it is not necessary, they will give you a certificate. You will need to submit this certificate with the child's visa application.

The UKBA will only accept test certificates from approved clinics. No other certificates will be accepted. You must pay in advance and take proof of payment with you to your appointment.

An appointment in South Africa will cost SAR935. In Zimbabwe it will cost US$113. This fee covers the TB test only. There is a separate fee that must be paid with the visa application.

International Organisation for Migration

To book a test appointment, you should apply to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). They will inform you how you should pay. You must tell them that you are intending to apply for a UK visa. The IOM can be reached at:

Your passport or other acceptable form of photographic ID
• 2 passport sized photographs
• proof of payment of the test fee; and
• If you have ever had TB before, you must provide your medical notes and details of your previous infection.

Visit should take 30 minutes

The clinic visit should not take more than an hour and should be completed in 30 minutes. You will have a chest x-ray. You may be asked to provide a sample of sputum.

If your x-ray is conclusive, you should have your results within 24 hours. If, on the other hand, your x-ray is inconclusive, your sputum sample will be analysed. This can take up to two months. If you do not have TB, you will be given a certificate which you must submit with your visa application. The certificate will be valid for six months.

If you do have TB, you will not get a certificate. You will be referred for treatment and will not be eligible for a UK visa until you have had treatment. Treatment can take six months.
