By Sanwar Ali:

Recently the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs has published its Visa Bulletin for September 2020 with the green card lottery  results for fiscal year 2021.  The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, grants 55,000 permanent resident visas each year.  The likelihood of success is low.  However, for the lucky few this is an excellent way of gaining a permanent immigrant visa for the US.

Donald Trump has in the past criticised the green card lottery program and says that he favours a scheme that will allow more employment based immigrant visas.  Extensive changes to the US immigration system are very difficult.  You need the agreement of both Houses of Congress.  There have not been extensive changes to the US visa system for many years.

The actual number of green card lottery applicants this year during the enrolment period last year was far lower than the previous year’s DV-2020 diversity lottery.   There were 6,741,128 qualified entries from around the world instead of more than 14 million for the previous year.   The new system means that only those with an unexpired passport could apply, so reducing the number of applicants.  This requirement was introduced for the first time.
