New Zealand's Seasonal Work Permit Pilot has been extended till September, said David Cunliffe Minister of Immigration. The minister wants more overseas workers to meet the seasonal labour demands in the horticulture and viniculture industries.
These industries have informed the government of New Zealand that this years season will go on for longer than originally expected and additional labour will be needed.
Under the extension to the Seasonal Work Permit Pilot, current overseas holders of the permit can now apply to renew their permits. This ensures workers who have already gained skills can continue their employment in areas needing labour.
Overseas workers from visa free countries to New Zealand, as of today can also apply for the permit.
Feedback from the growers indicate the scheme is working well and should continue in the future. New Zealand this year have already granted 1,100 Seasonal Work Permits.
