A new work permit quota for the Sectors Based Scheme Food Manufacturing sector was agreed to and became effective as of 01 June, 2006. The new quota is now set at 1,840 total work permits and is subdivided:
• Fish Processing - 230
• Meat Processing - 1110
• Mushroom Processing - 500
The current period for the Sectors Based Scheme closes on 31 December 2006. The sectors based scheme (SBS) allows workers from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) to enter the United Kingdom to take short-term or casual jobs. The SBS covers work in low skilled jobs within food manufacturing industries (meat and fish processing and mushroom production only).
