Statistics Netherlands have released their quarterly findings which show that immigration into the Netherlands is increasing, particularly from other European Union countries.
Nearly 32,000 people immigrated to the Netherlands during the first quarter of 2008, almost 6,000 more than in the same period last year. More than half of these new migrants were born in other EU member states.
Most immigrants who originated from within the EU come from Poland. In the first quarter of 2008, almost 3,500 Polish migrants arrived in the country, bringing the total number of first-generation Polish immigrants in the Netherlands to an estimated 45,000 as of 01 April 2008.
The number of Polish migrants in the Netherlands has doubled since 2004, when Poland joined the EU.
Statistics Netherlands attributed the increase in immigration to shortages in the Netherlands labor market.
