Hurricane Sandy, the most powerful storm to hit the eastern coast of the United States at least since Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, has caused offices of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to shut down in a number of states.
The storm caused the closure of the New York Stock Exchange on Monday 29th October 2012 for the first time since the September 11th 2001 attack on the World Trade Center. So far 20 people are known to have been killed in the US and Canada.
On Tuesday 30th October 2012, USCIS offices in
• Connecticut
• Delaware
• Maryland
• Massachusetts
• New Hampshire
• New Jersey
• New York
• Pennsylvania
• Rhode Island and
• Virginia
will be closed.
Appointments will be rearranged. If you have an appointment on Tuesday 30th October, you do not need to do anything. There is, as yet, no decision on whether the offices will reopen on Wednesday 31st October 2012.
If you wish to speak to someone today at USCIS the Eastern Telephone Centre based in Albany, New York will open from 10am (a two hour delay from the normal opening time).
