The government of Estonia, one of the newest European Union member states, which joined the EU in 2004, developed a new integration plan that focuses on bringing in immigrant labor, the daily Postimees reported. The government emphasized that the linguistic integration of non-Estonians, mainly Russians, already living in the country will not be neglected.
In connection with the free movement of labor, Population Minister Paul-Eerik Rummo said it was necessary to consider what an increased number of immigrants would mean for Estonia. He added that the country should look beyond national borders.
Little has been heard regarding the immigration policies of new EU member states, as many of them lose large percentages of their skilled workers, mainly to the UK where they are legally able to work.
