Apparently, President Donald Trump only has mild coronavirus symptoms. Trump has recently been admitted to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre. We wish Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump all the best and a swift recovery. Politically, the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic must have damaged Donald Trump’s election prospects. In addition, now that he has contracted coronavirus, he will have to give up on campaigning for a time, and it may delay the confirmation hearings for anti-immigration Trump supreme court nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett.
While people have criticised Donald Trump for his policies on coronavirus, it is not always easy to know what to do in this situation. If you have tough restrictions and a “lockdown”, you run the risk of being accused of destroying the economy and creating mass unemployment. After mocking Democratic candidate for the US presidency, Joe Biden, for constantly wearing a mask to protect himself and others from coronavirus, Donald Trump and his wife Melania have both contracted the virus. The couple is now self-isolating, with Trump taking to Twitter to say: “We will get through this together.”
During the first TV presidential election debate, the US President seemingly mocked Biden for wearing a face mask amid the pandemic. However, Trump’s comments have seemingly backfired, with the President now forced to self-isolate, losing crucial campaign days in his bid for re-election.
Trump, 74, is considered to be in the high-risk category and his positive test result, along with wife Melania, comes after one of his closest aides, Hope Hicks, also tested positive for the disease.
First presidential Trump Biden TV debate and travel without masks
Ms Hicks travelled with Trump on Air Force One to the first TV presidential debate in Ohio, with many of Trump’s family attending the debate, not wearing masks.
Under current health regulations, a person showing symptoms of, or testing positive for COVID-19, is required to self-isolate. The same guidelines also restrict the movements of those that have come into close contact with an infected individual, but they themselves have not tested positive or asymptomatic.
Trump has mostly avoided wearing a mask and has been seen flouting social distancing with his aides and others during official engagements.
More than 7.2 million Americans have been infected by the deadly disease, which has killed more than 200,000 people in the United States.
Trump doctor’s statement about coronavirus treatment
On October 1, Trump’s physician, Dr. Sean Conley, issued the following statement: “The President and the First Lady are well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence.”
“Rest assured I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any future developments,” Dr. Conley added.
According to the President’s most recent physical examination earlier in the year, Trump weighs 244lb (110.7kg), which is considered obese for a male of his height (1.9m or 6.3ft). However, at the time, Dr. Conley insisted that the President is healthy, and that Trump has the best healthcare available.
Under Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines a positive coronavirus test means that a person must self-isolate for 10 days.
Questions over positive coronavirus test
Many questions have been asked about the President’s positive coronavirus test, the most common of which is why did it take so long to diagnose Trump, if he is the most tested person in the world right now?
Others have asked how the virus will affect him, speculating that it could put the President in intensive care in the same way UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, was hospitalised after catching the disease.
However, medical experts have warned against speculating how the virus affects individuals. What is known, is that the older a person is, the greater the risk of coronavirus being life-threatening.
Data shows that people aged 64 – 74 with COVID-19 are five times more likely to require hospital care in the US. Meanwhile, the chances of death makes for grim reading, with people in this age bracket 90 times more likely to die than someone in their 20s.
The CDC says that eight out of every 10 COVID-related deaths in the US have been among the over 65s, with the virus seemingly affecting overweight men hardest.
However, the CDC said this does not mean the US President will be affected in the same way, and it’s unknown if Trump has yet developed any symptoms.

Prior to testing positive for the virus, Trump had tweeted: “Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for COVID-19. Terrible! The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!”
There has been no news on how Trump’s positive test will affect the second presidential debate that is scheduled for October 15 in Miami, Florida.
Trump downplays coronavirus effects
News that the President has the virus comes following his mocking of Biden for wearing a mask and just a week after telling Americans ‘not to worry’ about the disease because it affects ‘virtually nobody’, except the elderly and those with heart conditions.
It comes as a bitter blow so close to the US presidential elections in November, with campaign rallies cancelled and doubts surrounding the next presidential debate.
Over the past few weeks, Trump has insisted that America has ‘turned a corner’ in its handling of the pandemic, which has now been undermined by his own personal battle with the disease.
The White House will now likely face questions over why the President took such a cavalier approach toward keeping himself protected and how many people in the upper-levels of government have been affected.
The White House has already been hit by a number of government officials testing positive for the disease prior to Trump’s diagnosis. In May, Vice President Mike Pence’s press secretary Katie Miller tested positive, while in the same month a US Navy member serving as a personal valet to Trump, also tested positive.
National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien, a number of Secret Service agents, a Marine One pilot and a White House cafeteria worker have also tested positive.
The White House reportedly tests aides and anyone else who comes into contact with the President, daily.
