Australian universities have announced that there has been an increase in the number of Indian students applying for admission to its universities in the 2011 academic year. Ted Baillieu, premier of Australia's Victoria province, said that the number of Indian students in Australia on student visas has increased due to easier visa rules.
Australian High Commissioner Peter Varghese had the following to say about the increase in Indian students in the 2011 academic year: "There has been a significant increase in the number of applications received and the number of students applying for universities in Australia. The increase is almost 30 percent compared to last year."
However, the number of Indian students coming to Australia is still 40 percent down compared to the peak years of 2008 and 2009.
"There was decline not just in the number of Indian students but in the number of students from all countries. It was because of the overall economic scenario, and high [Australian] dollar value," Varghese said.
There is also a new streamlined student visa processing system that a number of Australian universities have recently signed up for with Australian Immigration. This new system will allow students with certificates of enrolment from participating Australian universities to be treated as low-risk applicants when applying for student visas. The changes are expected to come into effect 24 March 2012. This should lead to a further boost in international student visa numbers in Australia.
