Australian immigration has launched a series of new, temporary work visa subclasses. From 19 November, 2016 the following four new visa types have become available:
- Subclass 400 Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) Visa.
- Subclass 403 Temporary Work (International Relations) Visa.
- Subclass 407 Training Visa.
- Subclass 408 Temporary Activity Visa.
In a bid to make the process of applying for a temporary work visas easier, the new framework is geared towards reducing red tape for businesses, industry and foreign workers by scrapping sponsorship and nomination requirements for specific short stay activities.
Applicants will be able to lodge a visa application online, and a single sponsorship (temporary activities sponsor) would replace the six sponsorship types that currently exist (long stay activity, training and research, professional development, entertainment, special programme and superyacht crew).

As of November 19, foreign workers can apply to enter Australia for temporary work or a specified activity under new Australian visa Categories.
The Subclass 400 Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) Visa
For applicants seeking entry to Australia on a temporary basis, this visa enables foreign workers to:
Take up highly specialised, short-term work that isn’t ongoing
Participate in an activity or employment relating to Australia’s interests (only in limited circumstances)
Subclass 403 Temporary Work (International Relations) Visa
Eligible applicants can come to Australia for a temporary period under the following circumstances:
In accordance with a bilateral agreement
To represent a foreign government or to teach a foreign language in an Australian school
To take up full-time, domestic work for a diplomat
As a person with statutory privileges and immunities
To participate in the Seasonal Worker Programme
Subclass 407 Training Visa
This visa is designated for applicants seeking entry to Australia for the purposes of occupational training or participation in classroom-based professional development activities on a temporary basis.
Subclass 408 Temporary Activity Visa
This visa is reserved for applicants looking to come to Australia on a temporary basis and meet any of the following criteria:
Seeking work in the entertainment industry
Participating in non-ongoing cultural or social activities at the invitation of an Australian organisation
Observing or participating as an academic in a research project
Undertaking full-time religious work
Participating in a special programme to enhance international relations and cultural exchange
Participating in high-level sports (including training)
Working in a skilled position under a staff exchange arrangement
Participating in an Australian government endorsed event
Working as a superyacht crew member
Undertaking full-time domestic work in the household of certain senior foreign executives
